RELATED: How to Automate Your Favorite Apps with IFTTT (In the case of the Nest, that means turning off Auto-Away and Home/Away Assist–remember, they’re to separate features.) That’s less ideal, but there are definitely some users who prefer at least some manual control over their smart thermostat, even if it can do everything for you. Alternatively, you can just disable all automatic away features and manually change the temperature when you leave and when you get home. First, you can enable your thermostat’s geofencing feature, so that your smart thermostat uses your phone’s GPS to see if you’re home or not. It’s certainly frustrating, but there are a couple of things you can do to fix this. So, if you’re ever spending a lot of time in a different room and notice that the A/C isn’t kicking in when it should, it’s probably because you haven’t walked by your thermostat in a while and it thinks that you’re not home. If you’re home, but you spend most of your time in a room where your smart thermostat isn’t located, after a while the thermostat will think you’re not home and will automatically turn itself down until it detects motion. Honeywell Lyric: Which Smart Thermostat Should You Buy? If you only have Auto-Away enabled, the Nest is only using the motion sensor to determine whether you’re home or not, and that can cause some problems if your Nest thinks you’re not home when you actually are. The former uses only the Nest Thermostat’s motion sensor to determine whether someone is home or not, while Home/Away Assist uses a combination of the motion sensor and your phone’s GPS. The unit is of good quality but beware of the home version vs the pro version. On the Nest Thermostat, these features are called Auto-Away and Home/Away Assist, respectively. The price is no different than the "home" version in a big box store. It is so easy to install, I don't even know why they have a pro requirement to install. I don't recommend the pro version because of the extra costs associated with "professional installation". I guess I will just deal with warranty issues if that ever comes up, b ut I believe it will work just fine. The app works good as well and it doesn't seem to care if the unit is the pro version or the home version. NO Problems, it works perfectly and is very easy to program. I installed it myself as I have many other types of thermostats. I didn't feel like going through the hassle return process. I tried to go online to become a "professional" as I am in the HVAC business as a Mechanical Gas Inspector. What was sent to me was the NEST PRO which requires a professional installer for the manufacturer 2 year limited warranty to be valid. Nothing on the sales ad indicated this unit was not to be sold in retail. I purchased this on eBay thinking it was the standard NEST Gen 3 Thermostat. Good product but there is a difference to be aware of. 10 for 10 I would definitely buy this again or recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade. I am pretty sure that between the instructions, the app, and a little common cents anyone could install this and save themselves a good chunk of change. It is starting to lower the temp again when she leaves for work and raises it slightly when I am due to be home. It lowers the temp at night and brings it up a little about the time I roll out of bed and then it will raise it again when my wife gets up. It has just about learned my routine so I almost never have to touch it. Other than that it has been smooth sailing. The only "issue" you could say I have had was when my wife locked the account because she forgo t the password when she tried to log in after resetting her phone. Fast forward another month and this thing is just awesome! I have yet to have it randomly restart or do anything remotely weird. Once wired, which the app made a breeze by the way, it was easy to set up and get going. I did the install right and patched the wall before installing this. Fast forward a year or so and I pick up this little beauty. It would randomly reset and was slow to respond most of the time. Unfortunately I was never wowed by it as it always seemed to just work OK. When I originally bought my house it had a standard digital thermostat that I promptly changed to a Honeywell that had great reviews. I am writing this after having the item for about a month or so now at this point.
